Films To Go See
It's that time of the week where you are probably at home flicking through the channels of that increasingly boring weekend television. Fear not, my friends, for I have the solution for this harsh predicament; to the cinema! I will guide you through the highlights of this weeks cinema release so you can snuggle up in your neartest cinema and warm your cockles.
The Descendents.
This week see's the release of Oscar nominated The Descendents starring George Clooney and Matthew Lilliard. The Decendents is set in Hawaii where land baron Matt King's wife is in a coma after a speed boat accident. Soon a dark cloud descends (no pun) on the island and Matt must try to re-connect with his two daughters. In the midst of this, he discovers his wife was having an affair and soon secrets start turning in this poignant witty film.
Nominated for 5 Oscars including a Best Actor nod for Clooney, The Descendents is a critically acclaimed movie that has already four - five star reviews from critics. Directed by Alexander Payne, who directed the equally genius and witty Sideways, The Descendents is a quirky emotional movie that will make you laugh and cry all at once. Definitely one for those who enjoy great cinema
The Grey.
This is one for the boys or boy esque girls. The Grey, starring sultry voiced Liam Neeson, is about an oil drilling team whose plane crashes in the freezing cold of Alaska. With terror coming from the ever dropping temperature and a ravenous pack of wolves (argh!) the team must survive hoping that rescue will come to them soon through the mountains of snow. But will that ever come?
The only big name in this action-packed thriller is Neeson and he is probably the selling point for the movie, he brings the horror of being stranded in the cold to life and through his acting you can almost imagine the freeze nipping away. It is big and showy with a lot of scenes that will leave you on the edge of the seat. It's the perfect winter film but just hope the heating isn't broking otherwise you will be feeling "The Grey."
A Monster In Paris.
Now for those with kids or are generally a big child at heart comes a timeless french story that is likened to Phantom Of The Opera. A common house flea is oversized by accident and is terrorizing the streets of Paris. Emile and Raoul team up to stop the monster but finds out that he is harmless and is merely in love with a famous singer in France.
While this is a heart warming tale that will delight children with its colourful presence and humor, it is a far cry from the grand Pixar animations that we have been getting (Cars 2 excluded from this list) and adults may find themselves feeling bored in a matter of minutes. It's enough to keep the tykes from screaming for a couple of hours though.
Other movies out this week are supernatural horror, The Intruders and action film The Mercanaries both of which will not impress. So go and feast your eyes on the delights of the movies this week. And I hope you enjoy.
