Film News This Week
It's that time of the week where we pad our palms with the sofest of cushions to save it hurting out heads when they collide. Or we rejoyce with our friends over the greatest news to come at us this week. Who can tell? Let's dive in.
The Good News
Well, isn't 2012 the year of the Geek? With The Avengers (or Marvel Avengers Assemble for those who can't tell the difference between warring Superheroes and a 1960's spy television series) heading our way in a week and The Dark Knight Rises causing us to drool in massive amount of nerd spit. Lodged somewhere within these two beasts of a movie is The Amazing Spider-Man; the film that will make us forget about the dance. The re-booted series has gotten off to a great start with trailers and posters make us wet our pants with our own spidey webs. The new international trailer has hit Japan as well as new posters. (That's July 3rd, as we haven't accidentally missed it. We hope.)
From Superheroes to Superwriters (and bad segues;) and a new movie is in the works from our favourite comedienne. She has been delighting us in "30 Rock" and "Saturday Night Live" and her work on "Mean Girls" and "Date Night" have been making us chortle. A lot. So it's great news to hear that Tina Fey has penned another comedy, "Intern." The movie is all The Devil Wears Prada meets The Bucket List as a high flying fashion magazine advertises for an intern and finds a 70 year old man for the job, who wants to prove he isn't beyond his prime. With Fey at the helm, I'm sure hilarity will ensue. ENSUE!
(The sexiest 42 year old ever.)
Finally, Disney has been a major player in our childhood and nothing says a jolly good time than Mary Poppins. Yet, did you know all the trouble behind Mary Poppins? Such as the author of the book, P.L Travers, hated the film and thought the cartoon aspect was too much? She hated it so much that she protested to Disney using any more of her work! Now a film, Saving Mr Banks, is underway to unearth all that gritty detail. Tom Hanks is in talks of the role of Walt (although, we are disappointed it isn't Ryan Gosling. Hell, we're disappointed all movies aren't Ryan Gosling) and Emma Thompson as Travers and we are excited that John Lee Hancock (The Blind Side) maybe in the role of director. It's exciting juicy stuff.
(If you don't know who this is; your childhood was a black void)
The Bad News.
But from the great side of Disney to the bad and we are talking all things rollercoaster here. Due to the massive success of ride to movie film Pirates of Carribean, Disney are plundering there parks in hopes to find another big movie. There was even talks of a Matterhorn ride (no, seriously) but finally Disney settled on California's Mr Toad's Wild Ride, ride. The history of the ride goes as follows; it was a book, and then a cartoon film and then a ride, and then a live action film. And now it will be another. Hasn't Disney learnt anything from The Haunted Mansion?
(No apparently not.)
And while we are on the subject of things being flogged to death, Sabrina the Teenage Witch will get the reboot treatment. Courtesy of Sony Pictures, studio heads are hoping to give an edgy feel to the wiccan as she discovers her scary abilities along with her talking cat Salem, who is no longer a former Warlock but a former handsome Prince. Nothing says edgy as forbidden teenage love. The screenplay is being worked on by Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari. No word on who will be starring as the witch herself but we can start taking bets now. Here's mine.
And go.
